Sweet Treats

Capodimonte detail

Here is a peek at some of the little treasures that are available in store. I’m a stickler for “Brocante” style pieces, we have some gorgeous old Victorian Brass door handles, candle sticks and rustic copper jugs in the Gypsy Garden range.

I spoke to a lovely customer this morning who was up from melbourne. We were describing our dream home which was strangely similar. It’s an old country workers cottage (mine was all wood and hers was sandstone) and consists of simple rooms and a primitive kitchen. I would have my bath outside off the side of the house, we both have chickens roaming the yard and a well kept vegetable garden. We have creaky white wash floorboards and a woodfire oven. Tattered curtains and some fresh herbs and flowers on the rustic kitchen table. We both agreed we were born in the wrong century…

Lots of the treasures we bought back from our end of year trip have already made their way to new homes. One of my greatest pleasures in running Newspaper Taxi is seeing people fall in love with something from our store.

I’m not sure why it happens, but it seems that customers after a particular item always come back on the same day for the same item. It’s almost like an attractive energy is put onto an item the more people pour over it.

I always tell my customers if you do have to think about an item, to go home and measure a space or check a colour, don’t leave it for long.  I often hear tales of treasures lost from my customers travels, and some are regretting missing out on a special treasure to this day. The story about a Kewpie doll mould had me sighing and I never even saw it. Anyway I think you get the moral of this post…

In store we have lots of new stock. Some sweet little ornamental birdcages, gorgeous biscuit tins and beautiful bentwood chairs. Papier mache animal masks, big enamel bowls and lots of vintage cigarette tins.

I was pretty busy today and didn’t get a chance to photograph the Victorian birdcages that have just come in, they are so divine. I have been collecting birdcages for quite a few years and these ones are truly special, lets hope they don’t suddenly make their way into my house!

Glass Drop Pergola Bird Cage

This is a lovely pergola style cage with glass drops. Very pretty to hang near a window so the crystals catch the light.

In the background is one of a pair of gold metal floral wall sprays. They are quite lovely and would look beautiful above a bed.

Art Deco Fan Mirror

This is one of a pair of Art Deco fan mirrors. They are very unusual and one is in quite a state of disrepair but I actually prefer it to the other which is in rather good condition.

Gypsy Garden Birdcage

I finished making this little cage yesterday. It’s such a lovely shade of minty blue and I attached some vintage chandelier drops, an old teaspoon and some Swarovski crystals. It fits in very nicely with the Gypsy Garden range.

In the background of this image you can see the antique french wallpaper lining of an old velvet covered chest. It’s amazing, the outside of the little chest is plush faded green velvet with a metal lace trim and the edges are adorned with brass studs and regal embellishments of brass angels and crowns. It’s lined with a gorgeous frosted mint green silk and the inside of the lid is lined with the most beautiful hand printed french wall paper. This is truly an heirloom piece!

Farm yard treasures

Australian deco jugs

The “Gypsy farmhouse” range includes some beautiful ceramics in dusty amber hues. We also have a selection of early fruit box stencils from NSW farms. These metal stencils were salvaged from a burnt out farm in Uralla and now have the most beautiful patina. With great combinations of  letters, numbers and fonts you’re sure to find a special one that stands out for you.

English tins

The range also boasts an eclectic mix of tins. One of our best selling items, they are great for storage or just for display. This selection includes English tin canisters, early Australian sweets tins, Japanese tea tins and Dutch Tjoklat tins.

A few of my favorite things…

lady-pola

One of my special treasures is this amazing antique painting in a perfect state of disrepair. Her face is so beautiful and the detail in her lace gloves is just stunning.

tea-cozy-pola01

My absolute favorite is this antique glass beaded silk tea cozy c.1890.  The “Willow” design beadwork is in incredible condition for it’s age. The cozy is so beautifully soft inside as it’s hand lined with blue silk and feather down.

We also have a great range of early enamelware which includes bowls, mugs, canisters, candleholders and tea pots like the midnight blue Polish teapot seen above.

easter-pola

In store you’ll find a great range of vintage gift cards. Perfect for collage or scrap-book and available in many occasions including these super cute Easter cards.

Here in the new year

I hope you all had a lovely Christmas break, I have already seen some of our regular customers since we have been back and it’s just so nice to hear that the gifts bought at Newspaper Taxi for family and friends were so well received.

We had a great time on our (working) holiday up north and brought back lots of new treasures for the shop. We visited cute little towns all the way down through country NSW on our way back to Sydney and found some amazing pieces which are now available in store. I do recommend a visit to the shop soon, it really is a beautiful collection of new stock and some of the special pieces have already been snapped up!
